Passing through rolling grasslands on the very lower slopes of Mount Rinjani
This is where the climbing starts to get harder.
Camping here for the night.... just above the cloud line
A narrow edge... volcano caldera to one side, and the steep slope up which you climbed to the other
Crater Lake is over 200 metres deep... you can swim and fish here!
Steep volcanic scree and ash make the climb hard, but the summit is within sight
When you feel that you can't make it, your mountain guide will offer encouragement and show you the way
Camping alongside the lake is an amazing experience
With sunrise coming, you can see the awesome shadow of Rinjani off into the distance
A new caldera is forming within Mount Rinjani... still active today!
This is the hardest section of the climb... just 300 metres to go!
You made it! Looking deep into the caldera of Mount Rinjani
The 360 degree panorama is just beautiful
You are so high you can see clouds forming around the Crater Rim far below you
That ridge is what you have just walked across to get to the summit
Having made it to the summit, it is back to the Crater Rim camp site for a full breakfast
Spectacular views back to the camp site perched on the Crater Rim of Mount Rinjani
The most recent eruption of Mount Rinjani reshaped the entire caldera
After your Rinjani trek
What to do now?
So, you have completed your trek, your legs feel like rubber and you are having difficulty climbing the stairs to your room…. what now?Rather than rush home, why not spend a little time relaxing on Lombok, seeing the sights and attractions, relaxing on a beach, swimming in the ocean to stretch those muscles you didn’t know you had?
Many guests combine a trek with a short break to the Gili Islands. The Gili Islands are a small group of 3 islands just off the western coast of Lombok, and have something for everyone…Gili Trawangan - better known as the “party island”, Gili Trawangan offers an endless variety of beach bars, loud music, lots of international guests (mostly between 18 and 40 years of age), restaurants, water activities and much more. If you want a party before going home, this is the ideal locationGili Meno - the smallest of the three islands, Gili Meno is more for romantics and those who just want to chill out, enjoy the tropical island feel, perhaps go snorkelling and enjoy a drink at one of the beach-front bars and watch a sunsetGili Air - Gili Air is somewhere between Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno… it is much quieter than Gili Trawangan (or Gili T as it is commonly known) but certainly has plenty to do for entertainment
Senggigi tourist area
Senggigi is the main tourist resort area of Lombok. Located on the western side of the island about 1.5 hours drive from Senaru Village near Mount Rinjani, you will find an endless variety of accommodation options from home stay, to backpackers to 5 star luxury resorts. The Senggigi “strip” had a huge variety of bars and restaurants which stretches for about 500 metres and parties late into the night.
Take a Tour
You have come all this way, so what about experiencing the culture, the people, the history. It seems that everyone on Lombok has an “uncle who will give you best tour and best price”. Avoid street touts, ticket sellers, beach sellers, etc. They have no interest in how good your tour is going to be… they just want to make a sale. Only use professional tour operators so you know there won’t be any additional charges at the end of the day, and they actually know where they are going. Taxi? Unless you are going to the airport, don’t bother. It will cost you more to use a taxi than a professional tour company!
